Field note 02

Why the desert changes after dark

Namib, Namibia · July 2026 · 5 min

Desert dunes at dusk, the sky turning from copper to ink.

By day the desert is a drawing: sharp ridgelines, a single oryx, a sky too large to hold in a camera. After dark it becomes a room. The sand releases the heat it stole. Sound travels. Conversations get quieter without anyone deciding they should.

Design for the drop

A journey that only uses Namibia in daylight has misunderstood the place. We keep evenings free of generator noise and of itinerary. A camp earns its keep by how it behaves at 21:00, not by how the tent photographs at 16:00.

What not to fill

Do not schedule a ‘stargazing experience’ as if the sky were a theatre with a start time. Walk away from the lamp. Give it twenty minutes. The desert will do the rest.
