Edge of the World

Galápagos

0.9538° S — 90.9656° W

The islands sit on the equator and on a different clock. Animals do not perform. They simply continue, and you are the visitor who must learn the manners.

The Galápagos is not a zoo arranged for you. It is a set of volcanic rooms in which evolution is still at its desk. We choose boats for how they move through the park, not for how many balconies they advertise.

Days are landings, snorkels, silence on black rock while a bird decides you are furniture. Nights are the ship’s low engine and a sky without city light.

Edge of the world, here, means a reminder that the planet does not require an audience. You are lucky to be passing through.

The landings

Black lava, white sand, and brief hours ashore under park rules.

The water

Snorkelling as a way of listening — turtles, rays, the occasional sudden architecture of a shark.

The nights

A small ship, a dark deck, and the equator as a line you can feel.
